The Story
Under the shadowed canopy of an ancient southern wetland, where the whispering leaves spoke of forgotten magics and spirits roamed free, there stood a hidden earthen hut born from the grass and clay of its swampy home. It was here the Witch Doctor, a keeper of old secrets and binder of the earth’s hidden powers, dwelled. Only the very brave, the extremely foolish, or the horribly desperate would visit this place. But one night under a harvest moon, a visitor did come…
A young woman, her heart heavy with unrequited love, approached the hut with a trembling mixture of hope and fear. Barely more than a girl, she loved a young man who was enthralled by another. In her hands, she clutched a locket, her offering to the Witch Doctor, filled with the fervent wish to capture her beloved's heart and to cast shadows over her rival.
The Witch Doctor, an enigmatic figure swathed in whispering robes and bone jewelry that rattled with his movement, listened to the girl’s plea. His haunting eyes, deep and unfathomable, seemed to pierce through the darkness of her desires. He accepted the locket, a simple trinket, but in his skilled and weathered hands, it would become a vessel of potent enchantments.
“’Ware, young daughter,” the Witch Doctor’s voice was like the rustling music of dry leaves, “de magik dat bends de will of another comes wit’ a fel toll. You willin’ to pay dat price, uh?”
The young woman nodded, the moonlight casting shadows of resolve across her face. She was too entwined in her own pain, too eager for affection to heed the veiled threat in his words.
With ancient veves that hummed with power, the Witch Doctor began the dark working. He summoned the spirits of binding and entwined them with the essence of the locket. Silver smoke swirled in intricate patterns, and a dim glow emanated from the trinket, now throbbing with its own mystical energies. “He will notice you,” he whispered as the locket cooled, “and she be fadin’ from his heart as sure as beauty be fadin’ from dis ol’ world.”
As dawn crept over the horizon, the girl left with the enchanted locket clasped tightly in her hand, a hopeful smile touching her lips. Days passed, and as the Witch Doctor had promised, the man she loved and longed for, began to notice her. His gaze lingered on her, his words softened, and soon, he was utterly enchanted by her presence.
But as the young man’s affection grew, the other woman, once radiant and full of life, withered like a rose deprived of the sun. Her beauty ebbed away, leaving behind a visage marred by sorrow and loss. As the cursed woman became more gruesome, so too did the locket, as if it were a mirror of the horrible transformation; once a beautiful silver, now tarnished and rusted. The girl found she could not throw it away, for when she tried, she would always find it returned to her pocket or mysteriously hanging from the chain around her neck.
With each passing day, triumph tasted more like ash in the young woman’s mouth. For with her handsome young man’s newfound love came a chilling distance. He was a man bewitched, his emotions a facade sculpted by dark magic, not the heartfelt devotion the young woman craved. Her nights grew restless, haunted by the hollow look in her lover’s eyes and the cursed woman’s silent, jealous gaze during those brief visits when she would still come to call.
As months turned to years, the price of her wish became a suffocating cloak around her soul. She realized too late, after years spent in a marriage unblessed by sincere affection or children, that true love could never be forced or stolen. It was a gift freely given, pure and untainted by shadows. In seeking to capture love, she had trapped herself in a web of her own making, forever yearning for what might have been had she chosen a path lit by the stars of fate rather than the dark fires of envy and desperation.
And so, the Witch Doctor’s warning echoed through the years, a woeful reminder that in the realm of magik, as in love, every wish granted carries its own shadow.
